Australian bush clothing
Those of us who live in Australia, or possibly anywhere in the English-speaking world, would find it hard to miss the fact that Baz Luhrman’s long-awaited epic Australia is premiering this week. The film stars Nicole Kidman (our Nicole) and the hot, hunky, and apparently also very human and down to earth Hugh Jackman. The stars were seen on Oprah last week, along with one or our national treasures, the Tim Tam (a chocolate covered biscuit, or “cookie” as the yanks say).

Another star of the movie, judging from the advance publicity, will be Nicole’s outfits. Bush couture gone glam.
Australia has long had a bush clothing industry, which for women, can encompass the continuum which extends from the kitsch of checked shirts with machine-embroidered livestock motifs, so loved by many rural ladies, to the simple elegance of the garments made by the iconic RM Williams company.
Of course the legendary RM Williams started out by making boots, using only one piece of leather for each boot. There are some nice vintage RM boots on ebay at the moment.
these are for sale by the_neon_cowboythe_neon_cowboy
or how about these ones offered by vintagevirgos
RM Williams has many garments in it’s current summer collection with a vintage bush outfitter feel.
Other quality and well-established labels include saltbush and chetwynd.

Featured Seller | Comment (0)Featured Item of the Week ~ Vintage 1960’s Feathered Hat
We found this beautiful feathered hat at What’ll I Wear Vintage ~ also known as Swanky Selections. This time of the year is the perfect time to pay a little more attention to what you wear ~ beautiful party dresses, fancy sweaters and of course a stylish hat. This one is very versatile and could be worn with many different outfits… all at an amazingly low price.
~ Here are the details ~
We, at What’ll I Wear? Vintage! imagine this top drawer chapeau was worn to a dinner and drinks evening with powerful people in attendance. It would have accompanied a very expensive 2 piece suit, pumps, gloves and a mink stole as a topper. We actually made up a whole scenario based on just this hat, it was fun! That is one of the reasons I love vintage clothing so, each item has a history.
This would date to the late 50’s early 60’s and resembles a pill box hat but has a medium size brim. The interior of the crown measures 19 12″ in circumference and the brim’s interior is covered in a velour type fabric.
Look at the amazing shimmering feathers (which I believe to be pheasant) in tints and tones of browns, tans, golds, black with hot red, blaze orange, bright green and touches of blue to jazz up the basic shades. Lovely!
The condition is near excellent vintage. There are a couple of the feathers on the brim that need to be placed back in position. The label reads “Valerie Modes”
