A New 2 U Shoe

January 17th, 2008

Well, now you may often find shoes that are kinda yukky…..maybe the color is dullsville…..maybe it is crying out for some pizazz !

With me, I’m always wanting to Tart Up what’s on my feet. And having a vast bin of vintage fabric and stuff……so let’s get going.

Use a pair of shoes or boots that you can get your hands in and around. Test this out before you go crazy. Choose a fabric piece big enough to use on the bias, because the bias is stretchy and you wanna have this flexibility around footwear that’s curvy, ya know. You’ll need something for trim to cover raw edges …or not. Be all punky like that if you wanna.

These boots are leather and elastic fabric and that makes it easier to cover with fabric. If you have a pair of leather/vinyl shoes, you will likely need to punch small holes where you want to sew the fabric. Oh sure you can just glue on fabric, but the issue with that is the fabric will be less stretchy and may pull off quite easily during the times you wear your New 2 U shoes!

Here’s an awl….and ez tool for punching small holes to sew thru. Simple sewing ..in and out…..is all you need since after the sewing and before the trim is glued on, you’ll run a line of flexible clear-drying glue around the edges.

Lay the fabric over the area to be covered and pin pin pin. Carefully snip away the excess fabric. Here is where you’ll really appreciate the bias. A before pic and the fabric I used.

It’s an Italian tapestry skirt that contains spandex for stretchiness !

After sewing all around the edges and sniping carefully admire your handiwork. Like it? Spread a little line of a good craft glue on the stitches and fabric to hold it. After letting it dry, pin your trim over the edges. Gently glue under the trim, bit by bit. As you get a section glued and pressed down (gently) remove the pins since you wouldn’t want to glue the pins to your shoes…unless you really are going all punky with that……

I chose a skinny flat lace but something with fringe or rick-rack or whatever strikes your fancy can be used. Maybe you wanna cover the corners with buttons or tiny appliques….I think I’ll also change the shoelaces to ribbons since now the regular shoelaces look kinda blah !

eVintageSociety members have shoes and fabrics you might want…..take a look !
